These women in particular are part of a skateboarding community in New York City, and they are also my friends. One of them is a mother, all have corporate jobs, and all of them are surpassing cultural norms in a non-traditional way through skateboarding.
In this series, I am highlighting a moment in time, where they’re fearlessly landing a trick. This, along with the scale in which they are painted is meant for the viewer to look up at these women in respect.
I chose to use oil as my medium for its rich history in art, and its common use in portraiture of noblemen. In the history of art, women aren’t always portrayed as bold and fearless and instead have often been depicted for their delicate beauty. By using this medium to record women doing something other than sitting delicately, I am attempting to historically contribute authentically powerful images of women out into the world.
Although these women are meant to be viewed with power and respect, I want to make sure that this series is authentic to what it feels like to be in the skateboarding community as women. As you can see in the final piece, they are all skating together, and can be seen smiling, laughing, and having fun. This is what it means to have a supportive community.
